UNH Graduate Education Program Hosts Collaborative Breakfast

Photo of teachers having a discussion around tableThe UNH Teacher Education Department (Manchester Campus) hosted its ninth annual Collaborative Schools Breakfast on Friday, October 22.  Over thirty people were in attendance, including representatives from the University as well as the Amherst, Bedford, and Manchester School Districts, to discuss the ongoing collaborative relationship between UNH and the local area schools and communities.

The meeting served to further the University’s mission of community outreach and allowed for discussion between administrators, teachers, extra-curricular program staff, professors, and other representatives from UNH. Topics included: developing working relationships among all participants in the intern process; developing positive learning experiences for interns and cooperating teachers; the role of the University in supporting the school administrators.

The breakfast also served as a way for representatives of the community schools to provide feedback on the current programs that are taking place and to put the call out to those interested in future collaboration.

Currently, thirteen school sites in Manchester, Bedford, and Amherst are hosting forty-five Teacher Education Interns from the University.

The close of this year’s Collaborative Schools Breakfast opens the door to the beginning of the Teacher Education program’s prospective intern process for the next school year. Intent to intern forms are still being accepted and those interested can get more information from Pam Burbank, Senior Administrative Assistant for the Department of Education (pamela.burbank@unh.edu) or from the department’s graduate assistant, Lauren Giroliman (let2@wildcats.unh.edu).

One of the strengths of the UNH Teacher Education program is the focus on field-based experiences from the gateway course, Exploring Teaching, to the full-year graduate teaching internship. During the meeting participants discussed the current interns' experiences and how to continue to support their professional and academic development.
