Useful Tips

Review the admissions requirements of your program carefully to be sure you submit any required tests.

Sometimes a department will waive test scores if you already have a  masters degree.  Contact your department of interest to see if this is an option for you.

Our college code (CEEB code) is 003918.

Graduate Testing

The UNH College Code (CEEB Code) is 003918.

Testing Information

A number of programs at the graduate school require applicants to submit one of the standardized tests (usually the GRE, GMAT and/or the MAT). International applicants must also submit the TOEFL test (some departments also require the TSE) unless they attended a college within the United States for more then 2 years. To see if a test is required for a particular program please refer to that departments program page (from our main Programs of Study page).

The University also offers our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program through the ESL Institute each summer as well as during the academic year. The institute is designed for students who wish to develop their English Language skills and learn more about American culture and/or prepare for study at an American university.

Test booklets for the GRE, GMAT and TOEFL are available at the Graduate School. UNH Career Services also has information on these and other standardized tests.

TOEFL: All applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate a sufficient level of proficiency in the English language  to meet the admission requirement of the Graduate School. Proficiency can be demonstrated by the receipt of a Bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the United States or from a university in another country where English is the primary language of instruction. All other non-native speakers must achieve a minimum score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based tests) or 80 (internet based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Many departments and programs require submission of a TOEFL score of 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based tests) or 100 (internet based) or higher.  Recently added is the TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication - (for recommended TOEIC test scores please contact your department directly).

Department Requirements & Waivers

Scores older then 5 years are not normally acceptable without special permission from the department.   Sometimes a department will provide a full or temporary waiver of test scores based on previous degrees or special circumstances.  If you are requesting a waiver of some sort you will need to contact your department of interest directly and request one.  Be sure they notify our office if they agree to do this.  You should also note any request for a waiver in your application, however, please note that waivers will not be granted until our office hears word from the department.
