Graduate Assistantship Orientation

Spring 2010 Orientation

Date: Thursday, January 21st, 2010.

Time: 8:00am - 12:00

Location: DeMeritt Lecture Hall, Room 112

Please Note: This is a mandatory program for all newly appointed graduate assistants and fellows (as well as those who hold an appointment but have not yet been able to attend an orientation) and are expected to attend.

Overview

Your role as a graduate assistant will complement your academic program as well as make additional demands on you. You will be challenged to find the right balance between your studies and your obligations as a graduate assistant. Your assistantship responsibilities will bring you into contact with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. You will be expected to follow the advice of your faculty adviser and assistantship supervisor (not always the same person), respond to the demands of fellow graduate students as well as undergraduate students, and meet the expectations and standards of the faculty in your program. You may also need to balance these demands with those of your family. Occasionally you will need to find additional resources to help you with academic or personal needs. Sometimes you may find yourself in a complex situation that requires objective advice and support.

This orientation program will provide you with necessary tools to succeed at meeting the demands of a graduate assistantship. The orientation does not have all the answers, but we hope that it helps you to ask the right questions. Your most important resource will be your faculty adviser. You will also find that fellow students and department staff can be very helpful. In addition, do not hesitate to come to the Graduate School for assistance. Ultimately, you will create your own path for negotiating the demands of study, work, and personal life.

Criminal Background Checks

Criminal Background Checks are conducted for all graduate appointees who commence their duties after July 1, 2008. Check here for further details.

Documents*

Instead of passing out all the various flyers, brochures and other documents at the graduate assistant orientation this year it was decided to make them all available online. All documents have been converted to PDF files since these are the most convenient to use and everyone can access them as Adobe Reader is free software. Others are links directly to a website.

The documents provided were donated by various organizations, offices and departments at UNH. If you have any questions or concerns about your responsibilities as a graduate assistant please contact your department or our office.

*We work with all the various groups on campus to keep these documents up to date. However should we miss anything please contact the group in question directly for the most current information.
