SPAN 882 - Summer Seminar for Teachers
Credits:

Special two-week program designed for K-12 foreign language
teachers who want to enhance their teaching and Spanish
skills. The program is cosponsored by the Department of
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and the University of
Las Americas en Puebla, Mexico. Provides teachers with a
unique opportunity to gain Spanish language proficiency and
to learn about Mexican culture through the interaction with
native speakers. Current foreign language methods and
practices will be examined through readings, videos,
interviews, and field trips. Students design classroom
activities using authentic materials collected in the
community and compile a teaching portfolio based on the five
C's of Foreign Language National Standards--communication,
cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Each
participant takes home a collection of already-made lessons
which can be implemented immediately in their own teaching
contexts. Special fee.

An overview of the grammatical structure of Spanish through
an in-depth analysis of both morphology and syntax, with
emphasis given to the meaningful contrasts that exist within
the Spanish language and to grammatical contrasts between

study. An introduction to standard bibliographical
techniques and to form and style in the preparation and
writing of research findings. Preparation of a research

SPAN 903 - Applied Linguistics

Required of all graduate assistants teaching in the
departmental program, but open to all graduate students in
Spanish. Discussion of current methodology and linguistic
approaches to the teaching of Spanish. Instruction in the
use of audio-visual aids including language laboratories.
Readings, discussion, class observation. May be repeated for
a total of 3 credits.
SPAN 995 - Independent Study

Guided individual study with training in bibliography and
organization of materials. Topics selected by instructor and
