International Profiles

Cuneyt Yalcin

Program: Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering
Year in Program: Fourth Year
Home Country: Bulgaria
Undergraduate Institute: Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey

“I was born in Bulgaria and immigrated to Turkey in 1989. I finished my BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ankara, Turkey. In 2000, I came to UNH where I am pursuing my Ph.D. My research topic is concentrated on increasing the productivity of the Computer Numeric Controlled milling machines.”

“The Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering is a tough, but rewarding program. You can choose the courses that you want to take based on your background and area of interest.”

“You also get experience as a TA and even have the chance to teach your own course in the summer, which becomes very important to gain experiences as an instructor. Also, it helps you decide whether or not you want to become a college professor or work in the private sector.”

“It is difficult to be in a foreign country, but the international community at UNH is big and warm, and I am sure that a new coming student can find friends that he/she can share the same problems and opinions.”

“Coming to a new place and making new good friends is the best thing. Also, getting positive feedback from your students makes all the efforts and sacrifices worth every single moment. I am really glad that the ME department gave me this opportunity.”

“A few pieces of advice: install a messenger program on your computer for cheap and easy communication with your family, get recipes, get a driver’s liscense. Buy a thick coat.”

Hometown: New Delhi, India
Undergraduate Institution: India

“I came to the University of New Hampshire for the first time in December 2004 to pursue a masters in nursing degree.”

“At some point I feel that the way I am receiving my education encourages me to explore my potentials. That and faculty support are what I really feel are the most positive experiences I am getting at UNH as a grad student.”

“For newcomers and upcoming international students: always look for the opportunities lying ahead and try to avail them at maximum. I encourage you to get help from OISS (Office of International Student Services), I’ve found it to be the best support for international students.”

Dr. Eberhard Mobius, Professor of Physics and Earth, Oceans, and Space

Program: Earth, Oceans, and Space
Current Courses: Introduction to Modern Astronomy (Physics 406),
Introduction to Modern Astrophysics (Physics 710/810)
Solar Wind and Cosmic Rays (Physics 954)

“A big deciding factor was how congenial the faculty here is, especially in the sciences. We all share resources and that isn’t the case at all schools.”

“I have had good contact with the other German community members of UNH. Students and faculty members who are native German speakers meet every Tuesday evening and we speak German. It is a great experience.”

“I have enjoyed meeting people from other countries. Our children have gone to school here and have also gotten to meet many people of other nationalities. A multicultural environment is a positive thing.”

“In order to practice language skills, especially English, reach out to the community. Take advantage of the multicultural atmosphere here. A good balance would be very helpful. The opportunity is here.”
